Vulture – Vulture is the cleaner of the earth. You know that the vulture eats pretty much any carrion but did you know that it will never eat another bird? Take a look at how many birds lay on the side of the road and how many vultures are around it. The bird carrion is eaten by other critters but never by the vulture in honor of the winged ones. Vulture is the symbol of Life, Death, and Rebirth; healing, purification, and new visions; heaven and earth, spirit and matter, good and evil; balance.
Vultures are associated with the sun and the element Air symbolic of the mind, thoughts, intelligence, patience, tolerance, cleanliness, and resourcefulness. The Vulture performs their welcoming of the sun ritual every morning by spreading their wings to allow the sun to dry the dew and kill of any bacteria from the previous day’s ventures.
The Old World Vultures (Europe, Asia, Africa) have keen eyesight and the New World Vultures (Americas) have a keen sense of smell and can spot a three foot dead animal from 4 miles away. The American Black Vulture has a weak sense of smell and relies only by its sight.
The Vultures usually let the eagles get their fill first. Why? Because Eagles are able to tear open carcass hides, while Vultures, carrion-eating raptors, are unable to do this task. So, they allow the Eagles to do the ‘dirty work’ and to get first choice of the meat then to shoo them off so they can eat the remainder of the dinner before them.
The Vultures soar in the wind currents catching the thermals rising up to glide down and catch another without expending energy – just for the pleasure of it. So, when you see a vulture doing lazy circles in the sky, it’s not always because there is food below it waiting for the right time to go and eat.
*No New World Vulture possesses a syrinx which is the vocal organ of birds. Therefore the voice is limited to infrequent grunts and hisses. * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_World_vulture
